Niepoort's VV Branco is produced solely from grapes of Quinta de Baixo, Bairrada. Vinhas Velhas (VV or old vines) is the result of combining the varieties Maria Gomes and Bical from century-old vineyards with limestone terroir. Due to the natural acidity of the calcareous clay soil, these vineyards enable wines with a pH below 3.0, which makes possible the malolactic fermentation that occurs in 1000 litres Fuders over 60 years old, from Mosel. VV represents the incredible lightness and complexity of Bairrada.
Tasting Notes
The VV beautifully represents the incredible lightness and complexity of Bairrada wines. The vintage 2016 offers its usual vibrant profile, with a lot of tension and expressive aromas while at the same time remaining relatively austere. The mineral notes from the calcareous soils come through very distinctly, with an excellent balance between its fresh herbal aromas and notes of lime. On the palate, the wine impresses with its lightness, yet it still boasts body with plenty of grip. A linear, profoundly serious and distinctive white wine with an austere and deeply mineral finish
